It is also important to note that summer is low tourism season in Arizona’s deserts, so lower Phoenix occupancy is common anyway. Also, occupancy progressively increased each day of the week July 26 - Aug. 1, reaching a high of 51.8% on Saturday, Aug. 1, which was an increase of 5 percentage points over the previous Saturday.

Additionally, Revenue Per Available Room, or RevPAR, is down 28% over the same week last year. RevPAR, which is used industry-wide, is the most comprehensive measure of lodging performance.

Arizona drive traffic increases
Arizonans are traveling by car away from home 43.3% less now than they did prior to the beginning of the crisis in February, according to data measured on August 4 by the Arrivalist Daily Travel Index. Compared to the prior week, car travel by Arizonans decreased by 2.7%, and Americans as a whole traveled 1.9% less this week than last week.

Travelers altering trips declines
A biweekly survey of American Travelers, conducted by Longwoods International, monitors travel plans. As of July 29, 73% of American travelers with trips planned in the next six months said they will alter their travel plans due to the coronavirus. This is a drop of 4 percentage points from July 15. This includes either reducing travel, canceling trips, changing to a drive destination from a flight or changing from an international trip to a domestic trip.

The Arizona Office of Tourism provides this data on a weekly basis to help paint an accurate picture of the challenges facing Arizona’s tourism industry, which employed 192,000 Arizonans and contributed $1 billion to the state’s budget in 2018, and to track its recovery as a critical driver of Arizona’s economy.
