Phoenix Area Hotel Occupancy Tops 42%

Phoenix remains in Top 5 after steady weekly gains

PHOENIX, AZ. (JUNE 5, 2020) –– The most recent weekly Arizona tourism data shows hotel occupancy in the Phoenix region at 42.5% for the week of May 24 - May 30, representing an increase of 2 percentage points over last week and 20 percentage points since early April. Phoenix held steady with the 4th highest occupancy rate among the Top 25 U.S. markets for the second week in a row. Occupancy is down 27% year-over-year for this time period.

Additionally, Revenue Per Available Room, or RevPAR, for the week in Phoenix also improved but is still down 38% over the same week last year. RevPAR, which is used industry-wide, is the most comprehensive measure of lodging performance.

Memorial Day
Memorial Day may have helped kick-start the summer travel season. Occupancy during the holiday was 10 percentage points higher on Friday and 13 percentage points higher on both Saturday and Sunday compared to the previous week. Slightly higher occupancy continued through the week following Memorial Day, with occupancy on Saturday, May 30 remaining close to Memorial Day. Occupancy for this Memorial Day weekend was down 27 percentage points compared to last year.

Arizona drive traffic drops from last week
Arizonans are traveling by car away from home 46% less now than they did prior to the beginning of the crisis in February according to data measured on June 1 by the Arrivalist Daily Travel Index.

Compared to the prior week, car travel by Arizonans is down 13%, and Americans as a whole are traveling 10% less this week than last week. Although week-over-week is down, the overall trendline is still improving. The decrease is most likely due to the large influx of travelers for Memorial Day weekend. The index measures data through the movement of cars and defines a visitor as someone who travels at least 50 miles outside their home area.

The Arizona Office of Tourism provides this data on a weekly basis to help paint an accurate picture of the challenges facing Arizona’s tourism industry, which employed 192,000 Arizonans and contributed $1 billion to the state’s budget in 2018, and to track its recovery as a critical driver of Arizona’s economy.
